Viewmont defeats Davis in key Region 1 battle
The Viewmont Vikings advanced their record on Wednesday with a key Region 1 win over the Davis Darts. Viewmont took the lead early in the game when quarterback Jeremy Lieber ran up the middle for a six-yard touchdown. A Davis turnover put the Viking's offense back on the field. Austin Cheney then took the ball in 14 yards for a second Viewmont touchdown. The 14-point lead was cut in half when Davis' Ben Keaton ran in from four yards. Heading into halftime Viewmont pushed the lead out to 7-17 with a 23-yard kick by Austin Duncan.
The Darts gained momentum in the second half with twin single-yard touchdown runs by Gavin Fowler. The scores put Davis up 21-17, but the lead would be short lived. A fumbled punt snap put the ball on the Darts 29 yard line with 5:30 left in the game. Viewmont then advanced the ball to the nine yard line where Garrett Bushman was able to rush up the middle for the final score of the game. Bushman finished the game with 84 rushing yards on 14 carries. The Vikings five rushers amassed a total of 149 yards in the game.
Meanwhile, the Darts were plagued by penalties and turnovers, including two failed punt snaps and an interception. They would have held the lead, but a holding call on Davis took back a 51-yard touchdown run by Tanner Hinds. Hinds finished the game with 110 rushing yards on 25 carries, but the Viking's defense was able to keep him out of the end-zone.
The region loss is the first for Davis this season and puts them in the #2 spot behind Syracuse. Davis, Viewmont, and Syracuse all have single losses so far this season and the battle for Region 1 is not so clear. The Vikings move on to play the Fremont Silverwolves on October 9th. The Darts will also face the Silverwolves on October 16th.
