Park City, Dixie, and Syracuse: Golf Champs
Just as it seems our nice weather comes to a close for the year, so too has the Utah high school golf championships. As the tournaments came to a close, one match came down to the very end, one team took home their fifth straight title, and one came away with crown after only finishing in second place in their region.
In Park City’s 3A championship against Judge Memorial, it was so close that Park City’s Jack Burrus’ score had to be reviewed as he finished his round. The Judge Memorial Bulldogs had enter the round at five shots back and fought their way back to the deciding moment that lied in the tournament officials’ hands.
Coming in with an official round of 79 when the scores were posted, Burrus was quick to argue other-wise as both teams had thought that the final round was a deadlock. After a few minutes of gathering, the tournament officials looked over scorecards and talked amongst themselves as they came back with a conclusion… Park City was 3A champions by the deciding score of one shot.
The 4A championship was the complete opposite of the 3A and its ending. In a dominating yet not usual fashion, the Dixie Flyers came away with their fifth consecutive golf title and third consecutive at the 4A level. Championships have become the norm in recent years for the Flyers as they have now recorded their seventh title within the last eight years spent between the 3A and 4A classifications.
To put things into perspective on just how dominating the Dixie romp was, Bonneville High came in second at 34 shots behind the pace.
Short on a Region 1 title but not short on confidence, the Syracuse Titans took to the links looking to prove that they were better than their Region 1 finish. Prove it, they did, as they took the 5A golf title by a commanding 13 shot advantage. Even more satisfying, the Titans knocked off the defending 5A state champions, the Lone Peak Knights – by the 13 strokes – and Fremont finished third as they were 30 shots off of the pace.
