Looking to rebound from their opening game loss, the West Panthers did just that on Thursday night. The Panthers, led by Tyrell Corbin and Jordan Tanner, defeated the Dixie Flyers 55 to 31.
"Today we tried to focus on rebounding. That was the only problem we had in the West Jordan game so we tried to focus on that all week," said Corbin. Whether it was the extra work put in on defense or the superior athleticism of the Panthers, West pulled away from the Flyers after an even first quarter.
As much as it was the Panthers' rebounding, their defense was stifling the entire night in the second and third quarter of play the Panthers' defense held the Flyers to six and four points respectively. Dixie's high point total for the game was 12 coming in the first quarter.
The start of the game was slow-paced as both teams sluggishly battled up and down the court with several whistles stopping play. With only seconds remaining in the first quarter Dixie's Dillan Glendenning hit a three to put the Flyers up 12 to 8 before Corbin tied the game on one possesion. Corbin went up for a buzzer-beater with .3 seconds left and sank it as he was fouled in the process, he then hit his free throw to leave the game knotted at 12 a piece.
The Panthers' first half offense consisted of a heavy dose of Tyrell Corbin and Jordan Tanner as they were the only two with field goals. It was not until 1:08 left to play in the first half that someone not named Corbin or Tanner got on the board as West's Thomas Bullock connected on two free throws. The first field goal came from Junior Vea with 6:56 remaining in the third quarter.
Although the Panthers lost a lot from last years team, Corbin, their junior leader has confidence in his team's character. "Really we just have to work hard. We looked up to the team last year, all the seniors. So if we work hard we should be just like them," said Corbin.
On the night, Corbin led all scores with 19 points followed by Tanner with 15. Mike Sharp led the way for Dixie with 8 points.
