Bingham's "Muscle"

To be a succesful quarterback or running back at any level you have to possess gifts that put you above the rest. Whether it's a golden arm and a keen eye for hitting the open receiver, or the speed, power, and agility to leave tacklers with their face in the turf. These are only some of the engridients to a succesful offense, but the one that all to often goes unrecognized are the men up front.

Whether it's building a wall to keep your quarterback protected or whether it's bulldozing defenders that want nothing more than to level your running back, the offensive line holds the key. A perfect example of this is when a "can't miss" quarterback gets drafted to be the savior of your franchise (i.e. Alex Smith and the 49ers), they'll "miss" all day if their offensive line gives them no time to make their reads.

For the last three years the Bingham Miners have been the beneficiaries of Tuni Kanuch. A 6'3" 300 pound physical specimin, Kanuch is a nightmare for opposing defenders ripping open hole after hole for Harvey Langi and Richie Vakapuna while also providing quarterbacks Ty Hannay and Stefan Cantwell with ample time to make their reads.

"Tuni was the muscle of our offense", says Harvey Langi, Bingham's talented junior running back. "Holes were split open by him and Brandon (Taukeiaho)". Kanuch was physically able to manhandle opponents thanks in part to his 405 pound bench press and 615 pound squat. He is also surprisingly nimble for an offensive lineman of his size running a 4.9 40 yard dash.

Coming from a program the quality of Bingham High School speaks volumes to the potential that lies with Tuni. Three years as a starter in any high school program is a rarity, let alone starting three years for a program that consistantly finds itself near the top of Utah's 5A high schools. Kanuch will now take his game to the next level as he has verbally committed to play college ball at Brigham Young University.

Next time your at a high school football game and you see the "latest greatest" running back or quarterback, take one offensive series and watch their offensive line, you might just come away surprised. Watching the games that were played this year I can tell you, there were several programs that could have been put over the top with a Tuni Kanuch.
