Jasmine Porter is a special talent. The San Diego State-bound and current Layton Christian star, Porter has it all.
She can dish it, she can steal it, she can swat it, she can shoot it inside and out. Her talent is so evident that you can watch five minutes into one of her games and know that she is leaps and bounds above others in UHSAA 2A girl's basketball.
When asked about her star player, Coach Shara Fernandez smiled and said, "Fun"! She continued, "I have high expectations of her and she's meeting them, I think".
Layton Christian took to the court against Rowland Hall on Wednesday night in a match-up that was all but over in the first five minutes of the game. Faced with constant pressure, the Rowland Hall offense was forced into turnover after turnover as Layton Christian guards, Nicole Schaffer and Alissa Atisme, created easy baskets off the of the fast breaks.
Layton Christian had put 19 points on the board before Rowland Hall finally got their first two. By the end of the first period Rowland Hall was 2, by halftime they were 5. Layton Christian's team quickness was too much to overcome.
"Alissa is quicker than a cat", said Fernandez, "she makes it easier for everyone else to do their jobs."
The main beneficiary too the numerous steals that came Layton Christian's way was Porter who finished with 28 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and a couple blocks. Porter did all of this while playing on a sprained MCL that she suffered in her game Tuesday against Waterford. As per doctors' orders she said she was told, "I can't really do anything other than ride a bike and shoot around".
Even with the sprained ligament, Porter was far and away the most athletic on the court, but even she knows its a team game, "We all know what our role is," she continued, "You can tell that we're really unified.
Layton Christian went on to beat Rowland Hall handily, 63 to 17.
