It was round two for for the Juan Diego and Judge Memorial men's basketball teams on Wednesday night. The rivalry was as intense as ever as both teams had the Region 11 title in their sights.
Back on January 13th, Judge Memorial suffered their first and only defeat of 2009-10 region play as Juan Diego went into th Bulldogs' house and came away with a hard fought, intense victory. The victory was the Soaring Eagles' first road win in the short rivalry.
Three weeks later and sporting an unblemished Region 11 record, the Soaring Eagles took to their court to face a revenge-minded Judge team.
The Bulldog's Will Whitt and Danieal Shiramizu were determined to not have a repeat of their first match-up as they each scored 13 a piece and the Bulldog's jumped out to a quick 10 point lead. The story of the night however, was the Bulldogs' defensive intensity as they were determined not to let game one star, Ajay Pizza, have his way in the paint. Pizza finished the evening with five points, the same amount that the Soaring Eagles were held to in the first period of play.
As well as Judge Memorial's defense was executing, Juan Diego turned up their defensive effort in the second and third periods as the Bulldogs' were held to only 7 points per period... then with three minutes to play and only holding a three point lead, Whitt's hustle play off of his own missed free throw took the wind out of the Soaring Eagles' wings. Judge would go on to win, 44 to 33.
Both teams now stand tied for the Region 11 crown with one loss a piece and three games remaining.
